How to choose an open-source website template cover illustration

Begin with the content and the goal

List the pages, actions and information visitors need. A template is a starting point for that experience, not a reason to add sections your business does not need.

Check the source and license

Review the original repository, its license and any separate font, image or demo assets. Public code does not automatically grant rights to every asset shown in a demo.

Look beyond the preview

Inspect the repository's update history, framework version, dependencies, accessibility basics and deployment requirements. A polished preview alone cannot tell you how the project will be maintained.

Keep ownership and portability

Agree who controls the domain, repository, hosting account and data. Ask for a deployment handover so the site can move to another provider when needed.
